The Caetano de Campos building 2 is located on the Republic Square. It was once the headquarters of the Escola Normal, and today it houses the State Department of Education. On Sundays, it is very enjoyable to stroll through the “Fair of the Republic,” where a great variety of handicrafts are on offer.

The oldest name on record for this square is Largo dos Curros, in reference to the bull-fights that once took place there. Later, in 1865, it began to be called Largo 7 de Abril and on November 19, 1889 it was renamed Praça da República, in honor of the recently founded Republic and its new form of government.

I am not sure but I think this postcard shows the National Congress in Brasilia. The text on this card says only Aspecto do Congresso. Since the 1960s, the National Congress has its seat in Brasilia. As most of the official buildings in the city, it was designed by Oscar Niemeyer following the style of modern Brazilian architecture. The semisphere to the left is the seat of the Senate, and the semisphere to the right is the seat of the Chamber of the Deputies. Between them there are two towers of offices. The Congess also occupies other surrounding buildings, some of them interconnected by a tunnel.

Brasília is the capital of Brazil, located in the central part of the country. Building of the city began in 1956 with Lúcio Costa as the principal urban planner and Oscar Niemeyer as the principal architect. In 1960, it formally became Brazil’s capital.

Brasília is the result of a modern urban project designed by Lúcio Costa. When seen from above, the city’s pilot plan resembles the shape of an airplane – many prefer to refer to it as a bird with open wings –, although the architect’s original urban concept pointed to the shape of a cross, to symbolize possession.

The city of Brasília hosts a varied assortment of art works from great artists like Bruno Giorgi, Alfredo Ceschiatti, Athos Bulca~o, Marienne Peretti, Volpi, Di Cavalcanti, Victor Brecheret and Burle Marx, whose works have been integrated into the city’s architecture, making it a unique landscape.
