Beautiful sunset and moon over the Santa Rosa National Park in Costa Rica. This national park was created in 1971 to commemorate and preserve the historical setting of the Battle of Santa Rosa (March 20, 1856) including the historical mansion and the stonewall corrals. It’s main goal is to protect the savannah and decidious forest, marshlands, and mangroves, and abundant animal life, including several endagered species. It also has lovely recreational beaches.

Located in Guanacaste province, the Santa Rosa National Park encompasses a huge chunk of the Santa Elena Peninsula. Filled with lush vegetation during the rainy season, the Santa Rosa National Park turns into a topical dry forest in summer, with many meandering trails and stunning beaches. One of the main attractions of this park is that it is the only one of its kind on the planet, where 10 distinctive habitations can be found. Deciduous forests, oak forests, mangrove swamps, littoral woodlands, evergreen forests, marshlands and savannahs cover the entire park area.

Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. There have been at least 23 eruptions since 1723. The most recent was from 1963 to 1965. It sent tephra and secondary mudflows into cultivated areas, caused at least 40 deaths, and destroyed 400 houses and some factories. Irazu’s last eruption was on the day of President John F. Kennedy’s visit in 1963. Ash showers followed by rain left the Central Valley covered in black soot and sludge for months.
Today, as you travel along the southern slope of the volcano to the park, the potato, onion, and cabbage fields give way to dairy farms at higher elevations. The next eruption can’t be predicted with much accuracy, but currently the only activity in the crater is from fumaroles releasing toxic steam. There are several paths to explore, leading to the craters and a majestic waterfall. From the highest point in the park, on a clear day, you can see both, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time.

Here you can see a postcard showing the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (Reserva del bosque nuboso Monteverde) in Costa Rica. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a very important and popular ecotourism destination in Costa Rica. With its unique cloud canopy, this biological reserve located in Puntarenas province is 6 km east of the town of Santa Elena. Poorly drained areas support swamp forests while parts of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, dissected by deep gorges, have numerous crystal clear streams tumbling over rapids and waterfalls. The variable climate and large altitudinal gradient has helped produce an extremely high biodiversity.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest has excellent trails for hiking and exploration. It is a great place for bird watching, especially during February through May. The Monteverde Cloud Forest is home more than 300 species of orchids and 200 species of fern. With views of both the Pacific and Caribbean Oceans, this reserve is filled with a huge array of lofty and soaring trees laden with stunning epiphyte plants.
