Bochum is located in the centre of the Ruhr area. The Ruhr area is a densely populated part of Germany with around 5.3 million people. It’s identity was strongly derived from the formerly prevaliing coal-mining and steal industry. Today it is sometimes called ‘Ruhr city’ because often it is not clear where one city ends and the next starts.

The original structure was completed in 1708, but it was not until 1785 that the impressive dome by Karl Gontard was added.
