An extraordinary Expo 1998 initiative, this 17,185m (56,380ft) long and 30m (98ft) wide bridge is Europe’s longest bridge, with foundations extending 85m (279ft) below sea level. It has also been built to withstand 250 kmph winds and an earthquake 4.5 times stronger than the 1755 calamity.
You can see this bridge when gettin in Lisbon from its airport: coming from the south on the A2, turn off before Lisbon onto the A12/IP1 towards Lisboa Norte/Ponte Vasco da Gama. Cross the Vasco da Gama Bridge and continue on the IP1/E01/E80 towards Lisboa Centro to the Aeroporto Lisboa exit (journey time 15 minutes).
