Spirit Lake filled with debris following the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Deprived of its natural outlet by the eruption, with an earth and logdam, the surface of Spirit Lake has risen some 200 feet in elevation. Construction of tunnel alignments drain the lake to a constant level.
