This postcard from Ethiopia shows a young girl at Sanbate Market, Ethiopia (credit: Claude Legeret). I couldn’t find more information about this location. As for the Sanbate I found this quote: “The Sanbate women are said to be some of the most beautiful in the world”. If you know something more about the Sanbate Market in Ethiopia I appreciate your comment.

Senbete is a town on the road between Addis Ababa and Dessie. The name comes from Senbet which means Sunday in Amharic and the town has this name because there is an important market every Sunday. Several ethnic groups live in that area and the market is one place where they regularly meet. These groups are Amhara, Argobba, Afar and Oromo. While the Amhara in that region are Ethiopian Orthodox Christians all people other are Muslims. The photo shows either an Argobba or an Oromo girl. And, the photo must have been taken in the 1980ies because the postcard and a poster with the same photo existed already in the early 1990ies.
