Chain Bridge in Budapest

The Chain Bridge (Széchenyi lánchíd) in Budapest. For nearly a thousand years Buda and Pest were two cities. Then in 1873 they joined and became one city – Budapest. Today the river Danube divides the city into two parts.

Seven bridges join Buda and Pest, but the most beautiful of them is the Chain Bridge shown on this postcard. On the west bank of the city there are the woods and hills of Buda and the old town. On the east bank there is the modern Pest with the business and shopping centers.

The Tatras (Tatra Mountains) are the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range, and for centuries they were Poland’s natural border in the south. Arriving in Poland by air, the granite peaks rear up out of the clouds, slashing the skies like the claws of some mythic beast. Tatra Mountains, or the Tatras (Polish Tatry), is the highest range of the Carpathian Mountains and lie along Poland’s border with Slovakia. Two hour’s drive from Krakow one finds stunning views and pristine nature as well as the best skiing in winter and hiking, rock climbing, cave exploration, cycling, paragliding, etc. through the rest of the year.

The Tatra Mountains are high but relatively small. They are only 53 km long in a straight line measure and 80 km long if you measure them along their curved crest. They are approximately 15 km wide. Their width in the widest spot is only 18,5 km. Of their whole area of approximately 750 km2 to Poland belong only one fith, i.e. approximately 150 km2. The Highest peak is Gerlach (2,654m over the sea level ).

On the Polish side thehighest peak is Rysy (2,499 m), but its proper, higher peak (2,503 m) is located at the Slovac side. Rysy is only the tenth highest peak in the Tatra Mountains. The highest peak which is entirely on the Polish side is Kozi Wierch (2,291). It is located between two valleys: Dolina Gasienicowa and Dolina Pieciu Stawow Polskich.

Pec pod Snìžkou is known not only as a starting point for the climbing route to Snìžka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic, but also as an active alpine resort, open both in the summer and winter. Pec pod Snìžkou benefits from its geographic position and its altitute (800 – 1 602 m above sea level). Over 5 to 6 months of the year it is covered with snow.

Pec pod Snìžkou is one of the most well-known and most frequented mountain resorts in the Czech Republic, with yearround use. It lies in the valley of the river Úpa and the brooks Zelený and Luèní, set in resplendent natural surroundings amid the peaks Èerná hora, Jelení vrch, Lišèí hora, Studnièní hora, and Snìžka. The ski park SKI-PEC belongs among the best skiing terrains in the Czech Republic. Ten skilifts and one 4-seat chairlift with the total length of almost 7,500m (4 and 1 miles) can transport up to 8,750 skiers per hour.
