New Orleans is called the Crescent City because it was originally founded within the broad, crescent-shaped arch of the Mississippi River. Today, the city spreads to both banks of the river and is connected by the twin-span Greater New Orleans Bridge.
The city of New Orleans is located on the eastbank of the Mississippi River and the two bridges connect the eastbank and westbank.
